BSACI Guidelines / Standards of Care
The BSACI's Standards of Care Committee (SOCC) develops guidelines
for the management of patients with allergic disorders in secondary care
as well as initiating and leading national audits in allergy. Guideline Groups are selected and approved by the SOCC to draft guidelines which are progressed in an iterative process for publication.
committee's chair is Dr Andrew Clark. The committee currently consists
of 16 members including allergy specialists, paediatric allergists,
immunologists and GPs and is supported by Dr. Maryam Shayeghi, BSACI Research Officer. The work undertaken by the SOCC, the guideline group
members and the lay person(s) is on an honorary basis although expenses
to attend meetings are funded by the Society. The Society does not seek
external funding for the production of its guidelines.
By 2017 SOCC has published 13 guidelines, which are freely available via the menu on the left. SOCC also leads on nationial allergy audits and is involved in the development of SOPs. SOCC members recommend readings about topical issues here.
How the Standards of Care Committee (SOCC) develops BSACI guidelines
process of guideline development is informed by the AGREE instrument
(Appraisal of guidelines for research and evaluation) and the SIGN
(Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network) 50 guideline developer’s
handbook and has been continually adapted and refined.
NICE has accredited the process used by the BSACI
to produce its patient management guidelines. Accreditation is valid
from 2018 until 2023. More information on accreditation can be viewed at www.nice.org.uk/accreditation.
The process for the development of management guidelines comprises:
Planning which guidelines are needed.
Reviewing guideline outline with patient organisations, Allergy UK and Anaphylaxis Campaign for their input on areas for patient benefit.
Deciding the important issues to be addressed by each guideline.
Inviting experts in the field to draft a guideline.
Performing systematic reference searches.
Selection of appropriate references.
Iteration and refinement of the draft within SOCC.
Web based consultation of the draft guideline with all BSACI members.
Further development of the draft guidelines by SOCC by taking into account all comments received through the consultation.
Submission for peer review publication.
Guidelines are summarised and adapted for Primary Care to be published by e-Guidelines and/or other allergy journals, e.g. The Primary Care respiratory journal.
BSACI guidelines are based on the best available evidence. It is however recognised that evidence in some areas may be sparse or of poor quality. It is thus important that robust methodology is used to develop guidance even in areas where the evidence base is weak. Guidance for good practice for these topics is often much needed, and can also serve to highlight areas for future research. BSACI guidelines aim to adhere to the AGREE criteria (
BSACI guidelines are designed to give guidance in the United Kingdom. Special considerations are therefore given to drugs available within the NHS. The ethnic diversity within the UK should be considered by providing guidance on specific needs or risks within ethnic groups.
